the thought that counts

i think one of the cool things about people is that you can usually tell when they are thinking. people are so different and completely unique and i think we are relatively unequipped to interpret the facial expressions of strangers, and yet i think we can tell when someone is thinking. they go into that trance and you can see it on their face and in their body language. it’s almost like when french stewart would receive transmissions from the big giant head on 3rd rock from the sun and he’d throw his arms up and make the announcement with a very stately tone, and then when it was over he would snap out of his funk and be completely unaware of what had just transpired. sometimes it’s like that when someone gets lost in thought. i think it’s a neat occurrence and i wish i fell under the spell of deep thought more often. but it’s really not something you can force. you can sit on a bench in a park with a pad and a pen, but if it’s not the right time, you won’t have anything to write down. you can be driving on the highway in the dark and it’s raining and you’re lost and this brilliant idea comes to you. obviously it’s not the right time for you to be able to stop and write it down, so it’ll probably float away forever. but we channel pure intelligence sometimes, and it’s really cool, it’s like bigger than ourselves, it’s like a single point in time when each individual has a turn at being the smartest or most thoughtful person in the world for those seven seconds. but then it’s gone and you can try to write it down or record a description of this idea but it’s never recreated the same. nothing is ever as good the second time. so i think we should respect that person we walk past on the street who’s deep in thought. it’s his turn to summon greatness. you just feel bad for those who fall into their trance in the middle of the road and promptly get hit by a bus and die. you hope that they finished their thought before they got hit. maybe our thoughts get better and better and when we reach the top of the thought-provoking hierarchy we are cut down because we understand all there is to understand. and when a little child dies that just means that he got it quicker than most. it makes you wonder about all of those people who are so old and still alive, i guess they still don’t get it. they still think life is about bingo and motor scooters and bridge and the early bird special. branch out guys, play some uno once in a while or watch conan instead of oprah. do something.
